Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (FTM) with Indicator, Glass Vial with Needle-Port Septum, 20mL
Details
Hardy Diagnostics U68 Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (FTM) with Indicator is a sterile, prepared culture medium supplied as a 20 mL fill in a 20 mL glass serum vial for cultivating aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic microorganisms in normally sterile materials. Featuring a resazurin oxygen indicator and needle-port septum, the vial provides a visible indication of oxidation while permitting access without completely removing the closure.
Material/Structure
- Prepared liquid culture medium
- Container: 20 mL glass serum vial
- Closure: Needle-port septum
- Fill volume: 20 mL
- Translucent, light amber appearance with a pink layer at the medium-air interface
- Sterile
Formulation
- Fluid Thioglycollate Medium formulated in accordance with USP <71> sterility-testing procedures
- Contains pancreatic digest of casein, dextrose, yeast extract, sodium chloride, sodium thioglycollate, L-cystine, agar, and resazurin
- Formula per liter: 15.0 g pancreatic digest of casein, 5.5 g dextrose, 5.0 g yeast extract, 2.5 g sodium chloride, 0.5 g sodium thioglycollate, 0.5 g L-cystine, 0.75 g agar, and 1.0 mg resazurin
- Final pH: 7.1 ± 0.2 at 25°C
- Resazurin functions as an oxidation-reduction indicator and produces a pink color when oxidation increases.
- Sodium thioglycollate and L-cystine help maintain reduced oxygen conditions within the medium.
- The low agar concentration helps reduce oxygen diffusion through the medium.
Cleanroom Environment
- Supports sterility testing and microbiological quality-control workflows in pharmaceutical and compounding environments.
- Needle-port septum permits inoculation and sampling without completely removing the vial closure.
- Sterile, ready-to-use format reduces handling and in-house media preparation requirements.
- Suitable for use within controlled environments according to established facility procedures.
Benefits
- Supports the cultivation of aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic microorganisms.
- Resazurin provides a visible indication of increased oxidation within the medium.
- Sodium thioglycollate and L-cystine help maintain conditions that support microorganisms with different oxygen requirements.
- Needle-port septum provides convenient access while maintaining vial closure.
- Clear glass construction facilitates visual observation of microbial growth and changes in the oxygen indicator.
- Sterile, ready-to-use format reduces preparation time and handling requirements.
Applications
- USP <71> sterility-testing procedures
- Cultivation of aerobic microorganisms
- Cultivation of microaerophilic microorganisms
- Cultivation of anaerobic microorganisms
- Testing of normally sterile materials
- Pharmaceutical microbiology quality control
- Compounding pharmacy testing workflows
- General laboratory microbiology procedures
Storage
- Store at 2°C to 25°C.
- Keep away from direct light.
- Protect from excessive heat and freezing.
- A pink layer at the medium-air interface is expected and indicates oxidation of the resazurin indicator.
- A slight whitish precipitate may occur because of the agar content and does not affect performance.
- Do not use if the medium shows contamination, deterioration, unexpected discoloration, or is beyond its expiration date.
